Party on Dudes and Dudettes

I have been the unfortunate victim of endless shift work... only one more month, and the worst should be over. I need someone to stand up for me and keep me from being exploited. Besides shift work, I have been needing to deal with very hurtful people. It has validated my decision, and even though I have enjoyed my time here, it is a good opportunity to move on, and I will be sure to learn a lot in my new position.

In my home life I am also embracing some changes, getting ready to let go of the house, and becoming the guardian of a teenager. It's tough to cope when we hardly see each other, but I feel that we're making some progress.

The Oregon Coast is always a good destination when you need to jump in the car and get away. Especially nice when the valley is cooking.

Life is a little overwhelming sometimes, and I feel alone in the world from time to time, but I am learning to live with it.

Finally, after nine months, I had a chance for a girls' night out. I let them have their makeover session, and joined them for dinner. I gave them a round of applause when they came in, because they were looking ready to hit the town, while I was in my t-shirt. We had a lot of joking and laughing, and even a little mahjong before calling it a night. I am looking forward to more such entertainment in the future, as I move closer to the big city.

Next weekend, I will get to see my favorite non-person again. Emily!! I miss her very much, and I will get to doggy-sit her for a day. I also miss my Coffee boy, who I will be remembering as I drive through the forests of the Olympic peninsula on my way to see Emily.

Leadership Essentials 101 August 22-24

Don't get me wrong, the instructor rocked, with true enthusiasm. I had a hard time understanding her perspective, but it was enlightening. To my surprise, I was already implementing a lot of the skills the class was teaching, but I did learn some ways to be more effective as a leader and coach, which will help me a great deal in managing folks. I think what I learned will be helpful for me at any job I may have in the future, and to enhance my ability to interact and manage effectively. I was disappointed to be ignored, but I did get to see my good buddy from Springfield, and we had some very frank exchange about my future. I am very happy that he was completely supportive of my choice. In addition, I also could see that I need to practice my public speaking skills, as this is one area where I lack the confidence that I will need to be a truly effective leader.

After my shift work next week, I will have a long weekend. I should have a double day off, but that won't happen. I will be seeing friends in P-town, driving to L-town to check things out, and hopefully, sleeping a lot. The following picture shows my feeling about having to deal with unpleasant people.

Believe it or NOT!

I am HOT.

Horace: Don't stop Praying!

A Korean-American speaking Chinese in a Texan accent is funny.

Boiring Fish, it's not your fault, it was an abnormal shut down. Don't beat yourself down. You made it man, you saw the real deal.

Tech Dept. celebrated 11 years without an recordable injury on Willamette Queen. Hurray!

Give me the money, JY! Double the JY!

Horace is 63! Horace is retiring. BoringFish is becoming the ONE.

BoringFish is helping the head count at Millersburg, welcome to the elite group of defectors. Keep Counting.

Eric started the life of a work slave.

It's official, they even made the formal announcement at 2:30 meeting. I have joined the convent. I started to tell some hourly people too. They were shocked, no really. Now it all made sense.

BoringFish is going to be a FULL foreman.

SP is on going, next round please. Secret Project that is.

BoringFish sent her notice to TO, what a wuss & a quitter!

Congratulations are rolling in!

These are what I heard all night along, quite a contrast.

Congratulations!

Keep it running, man you were hammered last night. Don't wreck it now.

Work update : I am a fool, FOOL!

That's my latest self description as the life of a relief foreman. This update concluded that I continue to improve myself technically but that did not excuse the fact that I am the FOOL. In the latest rotation, I committed costly mistakes during duties, and I excelled in wrecking the machine. Last night, I had my first HAMMERED night and we lost 6 hours of production and have made cull tonnage of 65 since start up. The upside from that, no one gets hurt when we tried to put the sheet on the reel and I finally stopped my good streak of great runs, and start learning from my shortcomings. After all, I am not special. I wanted to stress that the crews were supportive and were at their best to make things work, however, when you are the GREEN foreman with a green crew. It's impossible not to feel that you were set up to dance with the tigers in the cage. AL said "They can't expect you to know how to fix things when you never seen it before." Thanks Al, Mark, Vanessa and Cindy, but I am still bummed.

The inserts summarized some of my mistakes in recent tours.
This was from last night comment 8/17:
#2 PM went down last night when a power bump took out a fuse for the primary BB drive fan. This is a small fan that cools the drive itself in the MCC not the drive motor. The fan went down, the drive heated up and shut down when it got to the high temperature interlock. There are no alarms or indications for this system or any of the other drives. With the PBB went the rest of the wet end.

The biggest problem from last night was the lack of flushouts. When the machine went down, there were no flushouts performed on the stock lines or the headboxes. We got VERY lucky that the headboxes did not plug up but it caught up with us on the bottom ply. The entire line from the MC pump to the consistency transmitter/meter in the basement above the filler screen was plugged like a brick. The line had to be opened in several different spots, the refiner had to be opened, and it all had to be flushed out multiple times. It took approximately 6 hours worth of work to get the line unplugged. During the work, the machine was transitioned to 33# and a duplex sheet.

It cannot be stressed enough just how important and fundamental line flushing is during any shutdown but particularly crashes. Even if you have to overflow tanks or stuffboxes or blow headboxes out on the floor, you need to do it. Make sure that you do it safely and take precautions to ensure that (like spotters or caution tape, etc) but it has to be done.

And the night before last, 8/16:
The machine was shut down this morning to replace the ENP blanket. The blanket was found to be delaminated about 6-12" in from the back edge. The area of delamination was very large and we were extremely lucky that it did not come apart on the fly. A spot on the reel was discovered last night and was traced back to the spot on the blanket but the seriousness of the situation was not recognized. It is very important to understand that if there is a problem discovered with the blanket (abnormal spots anywhere, oil/water spraying in a fixed spot, etc), its critical that you shut down in an orderly fashion and inspect the area. Particularly if there is a spot on the reel - that usually means that something "different" is going on in the nip and if its tied at all to the blanket, its not a good situation. Those situations are your opportunity to avert a press wreck and eliminate a lot of downtime. Even if it turns out to be a non issue after shutting down at least you've looked and ruled out the possibility.

The previous tour note, 7/28-7/31:
GRAVEYARD SHIFT
The draw in the machine was reduced some more this morning. The wire to press draw was reduced by about 10 fpm and this has the machine back to around 72 fpm of total draw. Try to keep it there. The draw was increased again on graveyard tonight and was too high. Anything over about 78 fpm is probably too much.

Dayshift was doing a very good job of keeping the waste left on the reel spool to a minimum. Make sure that we are always working together between the reel and winder to minimize how much we throw away. This really adds up to a lot of paper at the end of the month.

The screen rejects were found going to the couch pit today. Make sure these are going to the screening system whenever possible.

North

I am petitioning a seperation from MR ALBANY and I will be getting a trialed marriage with MR. W!.. yeah, I am, isn't it sweet? I am signing my life away, ok at least for the next 3 years. Then, I may ask for another seperation.

Shout out to my homies.

I talked to my friends on a regular basis. We usually chat about work, family, music, love life etc.

It was nice to re-connect to a few of those long lost friends. Some of the highlights are: Mosquito, best friend for life- gosh it was liked more than 1 year ago that we were hanging out in HK. The 4 golden flowers are doing good, coping with life, chucking along.

Ted was another lost pal that I haven't seen or talked to over a year, we re-connected recently via email and he is doing great with his new job, joining the elite mileage club.

Richard gotta send me a job description from IA? IL? OH? One of those. Remember the slogan at Ross "Friend don't let friend move to Toledo"

and Tod, he was liked "gotta go to bed ,can we talk tomorrow night?" NO

Cuddle Fish

Boringfish is cuddling tonight, enjoying soft skin and smooth scales in contact. Funny to feel the hair between the scales, brushing againt warm flesh. The hair of the dog is here, too. Kissing and slobbering all over everything - dogs are great that way, always giving regardless of how we treat them. "A dog is the only thing on earth that will love you more than himself." Read that at the Rogue. Those Rogues must be on to something. Good bye to Brewer, too. You will be missed, but please say hello to Coffee when you see him. You two will get along great. Take care of my chicken boy! He needs you to help him.

Too late now.. gotta go.. thanks for being patient with the scaly one.

Stoop on a Pick

I have been emotionally troubled for the past few weeks, and very stressed at times. I have been contemplating whether my decisions in life, and their consequences, will be poor decisions. I have become good at making decisions that cause a lot of pain, and it turns out that even decisions I think are good end up coming back to haunt me. I guess not making any decisions at all would probably be worse, but sometimes I wonder if that is possible.

I think a change of environment will be on the horizon. I don't know how I will sustain my lifestyle as I continue to spread myself more and more thin. I prefer to avoid confrontation and turmoil, but right now it seems that all my relationships are in this state. It is hard to convince myself I am headed in the right direction. I do have a job, a home and a supportive family, on the surface, as well as adult responsibilities. But underneath I am feeling a lot of conflict and concern for where this ship is headed.

I think nobody is happy around me, it seems that everyone is pissed at me. Not just me being crazy either - I think they really are mad at me. Probably a side-effect of me being a bit selfish, and focusing on my needs to exclusion of others. This may be short-sightedness on my part, as the big picture is not looking as good, even though my day-to-day decisions are focused on my own satisfaction.

I guess it is time to take a good long look at how I want to proceed, and then commit to my decision. Operating on a short-term basis seems to be getting me nowhere fast.

Independence Day
Watching Firework from the 8th deck of the digester tower (432 ft) at work was quite fun. In a far distance of the skynight, I was enjoying several firework shows in the Albany area in 180 degree and spending some quality time with the pulp mill foreman, bonding time with another fellow ChE.

"Superman" really returns!

The new superman is so delicious to look at... yes.. I am using the word delicious like he is some kind of food. I was drooling over the man of steel for the whole 154 minutes. Much better than those other spidermen and batmen. Always has been my favorite - the old one rocks, but the new one is just my style.

Spent my day off doing yard work... chores... very stimulating work watching weeds get pulled.

I began to realize recently that I turn into a horrible person as I get tired and grumpy... I've gotta work on treating others with respect. Some of you may say "you boringfish.. crazy" ...but apparently I am one mean and impatient person when I get tired out and hungry, and I only have showed it to people close to me... SCARYFish maybe a better name for me when I get grumpy.

No big plans for 4th of july---- hmmmw what should i do when most eateries are closed? May need to come up with a plan for having a meal after work. That's right - I will be working on July 4th - graveyard shift. No fireworks for me (at least I hope not! that would be a mess!) this year. Although we did have a pre-celebration fire at work today. A flaming forklift will cost us about $10,000 in damage.

MAMA'S home!

Beavers won the world series of College Baseball! It has been a nail biting tournament. The umpires need to check themselves into rehab. They are seriously unprofessional and blind. Great Gundy Gives us Gold!

It's so HOT in Oregon! I can't even do any yard work.. hey that's my poor excuse. Instead I can enjoy a cold beer in the living room watching NC get creamed by the Beavers. For the first time ever, the winner of the college world series is a two time loser at Omaha - OSU is the ultimate cinderella story. Glad to be an alum - they make the whole state proud!

Summer Time

My Foreman tour is done, but now instead of a four day weekend, I am on call now. I'll be back full-time tuesday for a machine shut - they don't really need to have me there, but it is another chance to learn more about all the things that happen during a shut. Some time in the future I hope this is worth it - because I really do need some time to recover after a full shift as foreman. On a good note, I guess it is not a bag thing. Someone will be taking my tehcnical on call, hopefully by next month. This person is a strong-headed person, and so far I am not having a wonderful time with her, but we shall see. She is a nice person, but she has an abrasive personality and doesn't like to give credit to others.

OSU is making history in Omaha at the College World Series. So far so good - I just hope they can hold on for the finals.

I am nervous about my northern exposure next month. I read recently that W is talking to several parties in efforts to sell the fine paper business. This could be a big question mark for my future at W.

Weather looks really hot this weekend. I'm not going to get out of the house if I can help it - no biking, hiking or rafting. I will be catching up on sleep. I'll be a couch yam. Sweet potato I.

Davy finally got his award for the Ski Oregon Challenge. No pass, but he did get a plaque with his name and "first place" on it.

Mama is coming home - it will be an early morning at PDX. Keep cool!

Wunder Week

I'm slow... it just hit me that after my second relief foreman shift, I now realize that I am expected to be a process engineer, junior mentor to a summer intern, active on safety committees and still be a foreman. On top of that, a maintenance foreman commented that they could do well without me or Horace. I am working hard, and trying to be the best employee I can be, but the put-downs don't really help much. I hate to vent, but at least I am containing my frustration here. I need to learn to say "no" at work. I just keep getting swamped. "We'll handle it" "We'll deal with it" and "We'll get it done" have been my motto since joining the PM, but it's just not realistic. I'm not prepared to devote every waking hour to the machine - I need weekends, even if the mill runs 24/7.

With this weekend in mind, for the last two days off, I devoted more than half my time off to working at the mill. Once I switch to night shift in July, that simply will not be possible. I will be sleeping all day, and working 14 hour nights. I had a pretty good time out of town this weekend, went to the Gorge and did some whining and hiking. I was accompanied by a farmer from Illinois. You all know who that is, right? Anyway, in between I made a quick stop at Fry's looking for a surveillance cam - not too much luck.

Home Depot is next stop for a security light. I also had a chance to stop by Sheri's house to congratulate Angela on her graduation. She will soon be starting grad school at Lewis and Clark to be a public servant in the schools. She should be taking on her first class in about 15 months. She was a big part of my college experience, and seeing her and her scrapbook brought back a lot of memories from my school days. I also got a chance to let my cousin know that I am proud of him for graduating.

With all those things out of the way, I still got some bar time and had a really good trip to P-town. Now I am back to my other rotation this coming week. How wunderful!!!

I have been thinking of Coffee quite a bit for the last year - I miss him a lot. My heart is hurting, and I am getting a little sadder each minute as the one-year mark approaches.

3 things today

Today at work I had a relatively bad day - safety issues, paper break, and long hours. Safety issues can be tough to address when people take things personally. It is hard to communicate with someone who doesn't wish to consider the responsibilities that we all have for safety.

My tenant is moving out, too. Time to look for a new roommate. Not easy in the summer, so I will have to make some extra effort at recruiting a new person - and everyone is trying to rent their spaces right now. Would have been nice to get more warning, but this is the wonderful life of the landlord.

On a positive note, the Beaver baseball team won two straight against Stanford, and will be facing Florida or Ole Miss in the next round. Would be great to see them go all the way, and after thumping Stanford 15-0, it seems like it could happen.

That's all in the land of the boringfish tonight. Sleepy time for grumpy fish.

X-men: The Last Stand

It's a cool movie. Never saw the first one, caught pieces of the second on TV, but went to the theater to see this one. Kind of a big deal for little miss Netflix. I thought it was cool, and I really liked blue furball and all the fun mutants. I am one myself, you know.

I am mentally preparing for my second shift rotation, checking my email and keeping track of the battles to come: export, felt mark, fine tanks, water usage reduction, shipping, waste recycling and bander repair. Many things to keep my head swimming. Not to mention safety - I just hope to have low cull and NO breaks. No upsets or crises, cross your fingers.

I miss my family after the Canada trip - lots of mixed emotions, not to mention my birthday - kind of a chance to re-evaluate and imagine what lies ahead. I thought a lot about the sacrifice that my ancestors have made to bring me where I am today. The trip brought up a lot of emotions from my past, and not to be a party pooper, but it is a little disturbing.

June and July will be tough, marking the anniversaries of my two biggest losses. I am trying not to be too sad, and I think of them both every day.

My fence is getting more vandalized each day - I complained to the police, but they really could care less. Unfortunately, Thirsty Thursday seems to be taking its toll on my picket fence and lawn. May need to find an alternative solution this summer.

Foreman Duties: Day 2

White top run went well, both machines were running with no breaks, and very little cull. I have been learning the other side of the foreman job - scheduling, administrative, and representing management. Our safety performance is not really standing out in comparison to other mills, and several incidents over the last few weeks have not helped matters. Everyone is accountable for their own safety, and for the first time, I saw a superintendent suspended over injuries in his department. In addition, big wigs from the top said they have suspended all capital projects until we get our selves in line. This is a painful lesson to learn as a new foreman, and a big challenge for me to address. My job is to continue to motivate people and put the best possible spin on things, in spite of people being down on the mill over safety issues.

Part VI: Fort Mac

Wanted: Pontiac Mini-van with Alberta license plate xxx-xxx.

RCMP was on our behind. Technically, it's my uncle, Ray's rear that they are going after. He forgot to pay at the gas station at Grassland on the way to Fort Mac. Yeah sure, I will tell you more. It's funny. On the way to Fort Mac, his cell phone rang, with a cop on the other end explaining that they got his license plate at the station. In the middle of the call, his phone died. Panic - until I saved the day and used my phone to call the station and pay by phone. For a moment, I thought I was being chased and stopped by RCMP on HWY 63, with the opening line like this. "Hands up, step out of the vehicle NOW!"

The other major highlight in Fort Mac was visiting the good old Canton restaurant - same old same old, but older. Reminded me of my early days in Fort Mac. Memories.

Got to take Grandma on a tour of town, Oil Sands center, and the few other highlights, such as WalMart and the SuperCenter. We were just looking for the mosquito mug - everyone in town remembers it, but nobody seemed to know where to find one. The final highlight was a drive out to visit the open mine where the oil sands are unearthed - Grandma was sure we would be attacked by bears, moose and more. She appreciated my fascination, but once she saw the big hole, she appeared unimpressed. I was eager to see more of the facility, but there was no time. Didn't see much wildlife at the viewpoint - but did bring back memories.

I am packed & ready to go to Fort Mac.

hm.....to be updated. I will be driving.

Iron Chef at Edmonton

Honey glazed chicken wings
After eating out 3 meals a day, it was nice to have some of Grandma's finest home cooking, including my lifetime favorite chicken wings. I remember when I used to have chicken wing eating contests with my cousin - I can still beat him. And this time I learned a few of Grandma's tricks. Some day I may need to learn the way.

Pre-Vacation update

My vacation started with breaking news from Taipei - my grandpa's brother's wife (my grand aunt) passed away. She was 98 years old, but it was still very sudden and upsetting. Some of my family and relatives are flying over there, and Grandma would have been there too if she had not been visiting here.

On another note I am still very obsessed with Northern Exposure and Eastern Adventure. No news so far, but at least Northern Exposure appears to be giving some feedback - Eastern Adventure is just a fantasy for now.

I am very pleased that I got to parade Grandma around to my friends; Todd got the honor of a family dinner at legin. It was an interesting night, to see them interact - a little awkward, since they don't speak any common language. I still like the idea of introducing good people to my Grandmother, though.

Secret Asian Plan

There are two secret developments - Eastern adventures, and Northern Exposure. Not much news on either front, but developments are ongoing. Will keep you posted as soon as declassified. Out.

Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers

Iron Chef Hong Kong

Touring Kitchen Stadium.

Ever since she arrived, my grandma has been cooking all the time - I think I've been fattening up for insulation on my Canada trip all week. But it's already spring there - I doubt we'll see much snow. No special wings yet - I think she may be saving the best for last. She has been a powerhouse in the kitchen, making fresh meals every day. My culinary hero.

Grandma has arrived!

Yes, Grandma is finally here. So happy to see her! I miss her so much, it will be great to have a few weeks to simply be together. She takes such good care of me.. here we are having a yummy dinner - though not nearly as yummy as the one she cooked for us the following night. Nothing beats Fujian Won Tons! I love you grandma!

Sweet Times at W High

Cost reductions are continual - paper plates, cups, plastic utensils, paper towels and kleenex are no longer on the supply list. Time to bring our own plates and hankies. Still waiting for word on toilet paper.

People reductions are occuring on a voluntary basis - one per week for a few months. After the state of the mill meeting we can see we are making money, and a new emphasis on rules and regulations. Should end up being for the best.

My projects include night shift training, which I am trying to get completed before my foreman schedule kicks into high gear. My first duty will be May 31 - but I have some nice supervisors giving me the sweet shift, working days only for all of June. It has benefits, but it also means I will be in the spotlight, with a lot of folks to keep track of.

Almost grandma time!
