After all
is said and done
will you know
how much you meant,
did you love
and allow love in,
and did you shelter
the lives of the innocent?
The ancient stirrings of the heart
that swept us out
from our primal
caverns of isolation
and into the tender
arms of belonging
are still with us
in the darkened hours.
And the night we fear
calls us back
to the early light
of our beginning,
when we learned to open
and be welcoming
and when love
taught us
how to survive
by burning a fire
beyond our caves
called human care. - Susan Frybort
