My badass friend of a friend: Yoona Park posted this today:
in my lifelong quest to rid the world of the word "oriental," i celebrate my very minor victory in getting new seasons to change the name of the "oriental spice" option from their soap line, and to pull all bars that currently bear that imprint. i appreciate new seasons' thoughtful and timely response to my email.
to those who are wondering what the big deal is, the use of the word "oriental" was originally used as an antonym for the word "occident," with the latter connoting the norm, and the former connoting the opposite of the norm--the exotic, the foreign, the "other." i am sure i am oversimplifying my edward said because it's been a couple decades but in even simpler terms, you don't see soaps labeled "caucasian spice." please stop saying "oriental." thank you
