For two months, the Beavers (8-3 overall, 7-1 in the Pac-10) have insisted they would stick with the idea of “playing one game at a time.”
And finally, it comes down to that—one game.
OSU’s drive to reach the Rose Bowl for the first time in 44 years could be decided in the 112th Civil War, this one at Reser Stadium in Corvallis against Oregon.
That’s could, because if the Beavers win they will be playing Penn State on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, but there’s also a scenario that sends OSU to the Rose Bowl if the Beavers lose to Oregon. That would only happen if USC then lost to UCLA on Dec. 6, leaving the Beavers, Ducks and Trojans all at 7-2 in the Pac-10. They would have all beaten each other, so the tiebreaker becomes results against the fourth-place team, and Oregon is eliminated because it lost to Cal while the other two defeated the Bears, and then the head-to-head tiebreak goes back into effect, and the Beavers beat USC.
OSU could make it simpler, by beating Oregon for a third consecutive year, something the Beavers haven’t done since the early ’70s. But OSU also hasn’t lost a Civil War at home since 1996, so it’s been five straight wins over the Ducks in Corvallis.
None of that seems to carry much weight in this game. It’s Oregon’s explosive offense against the Beavers defense. It’s Oregon’s defensive against … whoever and whatever the Beavers come up with Saturday.
The Beavers could play minus Quizz Rodgers, the league’s leading rusher, and his brother James will be hampered by a sore toe and ailing shoulder. The quarterback position is in doubt, though both Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao say they want to be the starter, and the position shouldn’t be shared.
Is it Moevao’s leadership, or Canfield’s ability? The Beavers may want to keep the Ducks guessing, not that the offense changes much.
Notes, Quotes
Scouting The Offense: What do the Beavers do, go back to the single wing? The Power-T? Top running back Quizz Rodgers is almost certainly out with a shoulder injury. Brother and receiver James Rodgers has a turf toe and a sore shoulder, which may mean diminished use of the fly sweep that was so effective against Arizona when Quizz Rodgers went out. Even the quarterback position is in doubt: is it sore-shoulder Lyle Moevao or Sean Canfield? So many offensive questions, it seems reasonable that OSU coach Mike Riley has tightened down access to practices.
Scouting The Defense: The Oregon spread, with running quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, isn’t exactly what the Beavers faced against Penn State or Utah, but those two defeats should concern the Beavers. Penn State put up 45 points on OSU and Utah scored 31. No other opponent this season has topped the 25 of Arizona State, and that included a last-minute touchdown. The biggest problem: while the Beavers can matchup on the perimeter in speed, it’s the speed of the Oregon play calling that will take away OSU’s ability to make situational substitutions. And there will be fewer opportunities to rotate fresh linemen during a series.
Quote To Note: “I have a sense that he will want to play and he will say whatever it takes to play. But there will be more to it than that.”—OSU coach Mike Riley, on whether injured running back Quizz Rodgers can make a plea to play against Oregon
Strategy And Personnel
THIS WEEK’S GAME: Oregon at Oregon State, Nov. 29—With OSU’s offense hobbled by injuries, the Civil War is likely to come down to whether the Beavers defense can hold the Ducks in check. Incentive should be on the side of the Beavers, in the Rose Bowl with a win, while the Ducks are possibly headed to the Holiday Bowl win or lose. The incentive edge then goes to the Beavers, and that’s usually a leading factor in rivalry games.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
RB Quizz Rodgers—The Pac-10’s leading rusher with an average of 113 yards isn’t likely to play after suffering a shoulder injury against Arizona, but does he somehow talk coaches into letting him give it a try for a play or two? That also puts him at risk of losing the Pac-10 rushing crown, which is decided on game average, not total yards. Even if Rodgers doesn’t play and his average holds, if Cal’s Jahvid Best is able to rush for more than 170 yards against Washington’s woeful defense when the Bears end their season Dec. 6 against the Huskies, Best will be the Pac-10 rushing champion.
LB Keaton Kristick—All that Oregon sideways running to find an opening will be countered by OSU’s speed at end and linebacker. Kristick is among the league leaders in tackles for lost yardage, and it’s both his instinct for when to make his break on a ball carrier and his speed that allow him to make the play. Opportunities will be numerous against Oregon’s spread.
RB Ryan McCants—If it’s not Quizz Rodgers in the backfield, the redshirt freshman becomes the primary ball carrier. The Beavers had a similar situation last season, and backup Matt Sieverson gashed the Ducks for an early touchdown and finished with a career day. Some of the running plays will change, but McCants is a big, powerful back, particular adept on OSU’s stretch play where he angles off a tackle’s block.
WR Sammie Stroughter—With so many of the OSU offensive weapons ailing, the load will fall more on the senior to come up with a big play as he did last week against Arizona. As he did two years ago with a pair of receptions on OSU’s drive to the field goal that beat the Ducks. A perfect way for one of OSU’s all-time greats to say farewell to Reser Stadium would be living up to that nickname given by his teammates of “Big Play Sammie.”
Roster Report:
• The OSU fans say farewell to some fairly significant seniors at Reser Stadium on Saturday.
Offensively, receivers Sammie Stroughter and Shane Morales; up front, tackles Andy Levitre and Tavita Thompson play their final home game, along with left guard Adam Speer. The defensive senior starters are ends Victor Butler and Slade Norris, two of the leading quarterback sackers in OSU history, tackle Pernnell Booth, middle linebacker Bryant Cornell and the entire secondary: corners Brandon Hughes and Keenan Lewis and safeties Al Afalava and Greg Laybourn.
That’s a group that has played integral roles as the Beavers have gone 10-4, 9-4 and currently 8-3 and bidding for the Rose Bowl.

Let’s say, if only for a second, that the annual Civil War between Oregon and Oregon State being played this week was a rivalry battle between two lousy teams going nowhere once the game was over.
The spoils wouldn’t diminish the intensity level much. Bottom line: It’s still the Civil War.
But this Civil War, it comes with high stakes.
This is No. 19 Oregon trying to keep No. 17 Oregon State out of the Rose Bowl. Trying to beat the Beavers on the very same field on which Oregon State whipped Southern California in September. Oregon also has a chance to send itself to the Holiday Bowl.
Yes, this is the Civil War, with feeling.
“It’s Civil War,” safety T.J. Ward said in Tuesday’s Eugene Register-Guard. “It’s easy to match their intensity. It’s a big game. I really don’t need no more motivation than to say we’re playing Oregon State.”
Said coach Mike Bellotti: “We want to win in Corvallis and we want to win the Civil War—for the value of the Civil War, first and foremost.”
OSU is in the position it is in because of that win over USC. Oregon wants to knock its rivals out of that position. It’s really that simple.
Oregon State (8-3, 7-1 Pac-10) is a field goal or so favorite to get that win needed to go to the Rose Bowl. Oregon comes in 8-3, 6-2 and winners of two straight to come into this game ready.
“We’re healthy, we’re rested (after a bye week), but we’re very hungry,” says Bellotti. “I’m going to play that up.”
No need, coach. This is the Civil War.
Notes, Quotes
Scouting The Offense: QB Jeremiah Masoli has come on strong and made this offense his as the Ducks have charged down the stretch. While his numbers aren’t great in road games, consider the 1-2 record and poor overall statistics are largely reflective of a new starter facing USC’s impenetrable defense and another outing in the muck against Cal.
Last year, Masoli was in junior college, winning a national championship, and didn’t play in the Civil War or any bowl game. Last year, the Ducks were mourning the loss of Dennis Dixon to a knee injury and the quarterback parade that followed. Masoli, the Pac-10 offensive player of the week after producing five touchdowns the last time Oregon played, has put an end to that parade.
Jeremiah Johnson didn’t play against Oregon State last year, either, and he and fellow running back Jeremiah Johnson should make life tough for the Beavers’ staunch defense.
Oregon comes into this game No. 6 in the country in rushing, just No. 81 passing but 11th in both total offense and offensive scoring. The Ducks are a less-than-stellar 63rd in the red zone.
Scouting The Defense: The Oregon defense has shown flashes at times this season but remains anything but a sure thing heading into this rivalry game.
But as the week wore on, it looked like Ducks might not have to deal with Oregon State’s Quizz Rodgers, listed as “very doubtful” by his coach. Rodgers’ absence would maker a difference.
The Ducks come into this game a more-than-respectable 32nd in the country against the run, a miserable 101st against the pass, 73rd in both total defense and scoring defense and a dreadful 112th inside the red zone. The opposition has gotten inside the Oregon 20-yard line 43 times this season and scored 40 of those times.
Quote To Note: “The hype surrounding it, the fact that both teams are ranked, both teams are playing for the best bowl game possible and a share of the conference championship that makes it easier in a sense. If you have to manufacture emotion or manufacture excitement that’s the difficulty for a coach. I don’t think I have to do that this week.”—Oregon coach Mike Bellotti on this week’s Civil War with Oregon State.
Strategy And Personnel
THIS WEEK’S GAME: Oregon at Oregon State, Nov. 29—The annual Civil War. This one sends OSU to the Rose Bowl if the Beavers win, and likely sends Oregon to the Holiday Bowl over OSU of the Ducks win. The Beavers are favored by a field goal. Oregon leads the all-time series, 55-46-10, but has dropped the last two games.
Players To Watch:
QB Jeremiah Masoli—He is coming off his second Pac-10 offensive player of the week award, accounting for five touchdowns in the win over Arizona that preceded the bye. Remember, this is a junior college transfer who still has two years left after this one.
RBs LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah Johnson—The two-headed monster has to be a major factor in this game at Oregon State as Blount comes into the game needing one rushing touchdown to set the all-time Oregon single season record. Johnson was hurt and missed this game last season. “It’s the Civil War,” says Johnson. “We’re going to be amped. We’re going to be fired up and ready to knock some heads off.”
DE Nick Reed—He had 1.5 tackles for loss in the win over Arizona and is now tied for second place on the school’s all-time list with 48. Saul Patu owns the school record with 53. Reed is also tied with Patu for second place on the all-time school sack list, with 26.5, 2.5 behind Ernest Jones.
Roster Report:
• Oregon coach Mike Bellotti welcomes banged up players back to practice after the bye week and says his of his team, “We’re healthy, we’re rested.”
• CB Walter Thurmond III, G Mark Lewis and DT Tonio Colette were all back at practice and expected to play against Oregon State.
• ROV Patrick Chung and C Max Unger should both make their 50th straight starts Saturday.
• K Morgan Flint, the walk-on, continues to write a great late-season story for the Ducks. He is 4-for-4 on field goals and made all 14 of his extra points.
• QB Jeremiah Masoli’s three touchdown runs against Arizona tied the program record for a quarterback, set previously by Joey Harrington and Kellen Clemens.
• WR Terence Scott had six catches for 87 yards the last time UO played.
• TE Ed Dickson returned from oblivion after one catch in four games against Arizona. He had five catches in the first half, seven for the game. “It feels good to be back,” he said.
• The Ducks have averaged 45 points per game in their eight victories, scoring at least 54 points four times.

Study shows messiness leads to behavior decline
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer Randolph E. Schmid, Ap Science Writer – 48 mins ago
WASHINGTON – Does a messy neighborhood make a difference on how people act? It sure does. Graffiti on the walls, trash in the street, bicycles chained to a fence, all resulted in a decline in how people behaved in a series of experiments.
A bit of litter or graffiti didn't lead to predatory crime, but actions ranging from littering to trespassing and minor stealing all increased when people saw evidence of others ignoring the rules of good behavior, Dutch researchers report in Thursday's online edition of the journal Science.
In normal behavior most people try to act appropriately to the circumstances, explained lead author Kees Keizer of the faculty of behavioral and social sciences at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. But some tend to avoid effort or seek ways to gain for themselves.
Things like littering an area or applying graffiti change the circumstances by indicating that others are not behaving correctly, which weakens the incentive for people to do the right thing.
So the researchers were not surprised that people littered more in messy area, for example. But, added Keizer: "We were, however, surprised by the size of the effect."
Here's an example.
The researchers found a tidy alley in a shopping area where people parked their bicycles. There was a no-littering sign on the wall.
The researchers attached flyers for a nonexistent store to the bike handlebars and observed behavior.
Under normal circumstances, 33 percent of riders littered the alley with the flyer. But after researchers defaced the alley wall with graffiti, the share of riders who littered with the flyers jumped to 69 percent.
They did a half-dozen similar experiments, all with similar results.
While the study seems to deliver a negative message, Keizer pointed out that "it also shows that municipal officials and the public can have a significant impact on the influence of norms and rules on behavior."
In other words, keep public areas neat and people will be less likely to make a mess.
The work is related to the "Broken Window Theory," which suggests that urban disorder such as broken windows and graffiti encourage petty crime.
This research doesn't go that far, said Robert J. Sampson, chairman of Harvard University's department of sociology.
"It's an interesting study, it's very clever. And the results are believable within the limited bounds set by their design," said Sampson, who was not part of the research team.
But the results don't show that disorder spreads to predatory crime, he said, what they show is that disorder increases people's likelihood of committing (similar) acts."
In addition to the alley with graffiti, here's how the experiments worked:
Test Two:
A fence partly closed off the main entrance to a parking lot. There was a narrow gap and a no-admittance sign that pointed out a new entry, 200 yards away. A second sign prohibited locking bikes to the fence.
When the fence was clear, 27 percent of people heading for their cars ignored the no-admittance sign and squeezed through the gap in the fence. But after several bikes were locked to the fence in defiance of that ban, 82 percent of people going to their cars squeezed through the prohibited entry.
Test Three:
Flyers were placed under the windshield wipers of cars in a parking garage next to a market. A sign on the wall asked people to return their shopping carts to the market.
When the lot was clear of shopping carts, 30 percent of drivers littered the lot with the flyers. But when a few carts were left in a disorderly state around the garage, 58 percent of people littered.
Test Four:
Two weeks before New Year's Day researchers visited a bicycle parking shed near a train station and attached flyers to the handlebars. Under normal conditions 52 percent of the riders littered the shed with the flyers. Then the researchers set off fireworks outside the shed — which residents know is illegal in the period before New Year. Hearing the fireworks, 80 percent of riders littered the shed.
Tests Five and Six:
An envelope with money visible through the address window was placed sticking out of a mailbox.
Under ordinary conditions 13 percent of passers-by stole the envelope.
When the same mailbox was defaced with graffiti the percentage taking the money jumped to 27 percent.
After researchers cleaned the mailbox, but messed up the area around it with litter, 25 percent stole the money.

Just got a letter via email from Company CEO that posted that question and asked for a resposne.. You may ask why, well, he is ready to trim my none-existing pension, retirement performance plan, profit sharing plan and probably my 401 (K) and he wants to know what kind of employment package would attract and keep me around!
Hm... what should I tell him? I want growth and I want them to leave my retirement account alone!

Fats Domino - Blue Monday
Thank EJ for sharing....
“Blue Monday” by Fats Domino
Blue Monday, how I hate Blue Monday
Got to work like a slave all day
Here come Tuesday, oh hard Tuesday
I'm so tired, I've no time to play
Here comes Wednesday, I'm beat to my socks
My gal calls, got to tell her that I'm out
'Cause Thursday is a hard working day
And Friday I get my pay
Saturday morning, whoa, Saturday morning
All my tiredness has gone away
Got my money and my honey
And I'm out on the stand to play
Sunday morning my head is bad
Though it's worth it for the times that I've had
But I've got to get my rest
'Cause Monday is a mess

Is Washington State the worst Pac-10 team ever?
Forget Washington D.C., bailout package needed in state of Washington By Chris Fowler ESPN.com
Bailout Package
Can the Pac-10 construct a Wall Street-style bailout package for the group that needs it most in these troubled times? That would be Washington. The state, that is.
The Washington State Cougars, a once-proud program, has sunk into desperate times. The Cougars have surrendered 60-plus points four times, a first in major college football. In retrospect, it seems miraculous that Wazzu held Oklahoma State's mighty offense to a mere 39 points in the opener.
Stanford's struggling offense seems unlikely to hit the 6-oh Saturday, but you never know against WSU.
I'm not mean-spirited. I know college athletes don't want to be pitied. But I do feel sorry for the players and for rookie coach Paul Wulff and his staff. He inherited a mess from Bill Doba.
It's not that the cupboard is bare at Wazzu. There is no cupboard. There may be some lumber around to build one, but it hasn't been found.
Washington State's level of talent and level of play is so low that it has become a serious embarrassment to the conference. Throw in the winless year over in Seattle that cost Tyrone Willingham his job at Washington, and I am not sure if worse college football has been played in one state since 1987's Sunflower State classic, when Kansas State tied Kansas, 17-17, with the 'Cats finishing the year 0-10-1 and the Jayhawks 1-9-1.
So here's the bailout plan:
1. Expand the scholarship limit for the Cougs and Huskies from 85 back to 95.
2. Offer generous tax incentives for families of the blue-chip players who want to stay in-state and support their local programs, instead of shipping out south of the (state) border.
3. Redistribute the wealth in the Pac-10 by taxing the rich and forcing other schools to ship some of their players north to help the disadvantaged Washington programs. The super-rich (USC) would have to send three freaks-in-waiting to each team. At least one skill player would have to be part of the bailout package. Heck, Pete wouldn't even miss them.
Oregon, Oregon State, Cal, and Arizona would have to send two guys to each team. Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona State would be taxed just one player for each program. The Sun Devils have clearly slipped in to this lower tax bracket by dropping off the top of Camelback Mountain lately. So, that's 14 live bodies each donated to the cause of rebuilding the Cougars and Huskies. It's a start.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Paul Wulff at Washington State.
Just like on Wall Street, other painful steps will have to be taken. Cuts must be made. Washington must be rescued from its naked ambition. Next season's date with LSU must be cancelled. Ditto for 2010's scheduled collisions with BYU and Nebraska. The Huskies have an enormous deficit of talent that would even make "W" blush. The next administration will inherit it. These cuts are necessary for the short term health and growth of the program.
Washington State has not been as guilty of taking on more foreign (nonconference) debt than it can possibly handle. But the planned junket to San Antonio next year to face Notre Dame is an earmark that has to be looked at. Isn't Portland State, a more prudent option, available?
An emergency measure could be to eliminate the Cougs' finale in Hawaii this season. It takes away some of the drama of the Apple Cup.
By the way, the final part of the bailout plan is to roll back the rules for the Apple Cup to the pre-overtime era. A fitting conclusion would be a 17-17 tie, just like that game 21 years ago in Manhattan, so that neither side has to face another loss.
I know what some of you are thinking: these "spread the wealth" measures are extreme and un-American. They will make the Pac-10 "socialist." In other words, a place where there is no upper crust, just a massive middle class content to get by on equally distributed wealth.
Yes, comrades. We are seeing a glimpse into the future. And it looks a lot like the ACC. Or the Big East.
You do realize the above is a goof, right? I assume so.
But I take no chances in the context-free, irony-free age of blogs and YouTube.
