Divorce or “That’s What She Said” - Steven Benjamin

I waited at the alter where I’m told love is blind
I served in the armies striking down manunkind
I raged at the cynics, claiming this, my birthright
Proved that Providence lives in the light
So you made me your hero to serve for all time
Made me your lover, your frontman, your crime
I basked in the image I projected from behind
Then made me your widow by breaking my mind
Eros, he told me I’d have to pay the price
With arrows adorned me, an eager sacrifice
As I laughed and tried to give the boy advice
But he’d gone by then and you knew my vice
“Lord,” you said, as I fell at your bed
Scorned, half dead, that day that we wed
“Don’t undo the perfect poem we’ve bled
Don’t let any of this go to your head”
Now it’s too late, of course
I tell our daughter “Stay the course,
Love is a joke without remorse”
She rolls her eyes and retorts
“That’s what Mom said.”
