small talk is perfectly beautiful when you’re stepping out on a limb and recovering from complex post traumatic stress issues or early-life trauma, and are making brave efforts to form healthy connections. while longer, deeper conversations with someone new might feel intense and require some downtime to decompress afterwards, it’s often best to begin in smaller increments that, over time, will take you into deeper places of healing.
no, you’re not odd or permanently damaged or have an aversion to close dynamics —however, there was a time when forming bonds became too hard to establish and interpersonal relationships were too challenging to maintain due to a destabilizing home life interrupting healthy development or creating unnatural fatigue from stress overload.
now you can nurture small things to bring a level of healing from the disconnect and setbacks of early life. you can begin to open a little more. lean in and listen just a little more. offer yourself a little more and feel a true sense of connection.
you may always have to deal with the sensitivities and triggers, but as you come closer, little by little, towards showing up and offering, you’re building warm, sustainable relationships.
there’s a flame growing warmly in the heart of our connections, coming in full view to brighten darkened skies. familiar eyes, comforting voices, deepening memories become our sparkling treasures. we are all sunrises, glimmering at first, before shining boldly. - Susan Frybort
The Beauty of Small
Let me paint for you the beauty of small.. small words
small observations, small greetings, short calls
These are the bravest steps for someone shy,
Someone hurt, someone trying to connect,
and someone healing from trauma.
small steps, coming out of hiding and
finally feeling safe enough to make the first move
small steps, relaxed and ready to practice healthy ways
to bridge and bond for the very first time.
small steps, like a beautiful sunrise...
glimmering at first, before shining boldly. - Susan Frybort
