WHAT A POET COLLECTS

Old photos and memories
and thoughts to reflect;
these are some things
a poet collects.
Dried petals, weathered stones,
lost dreams and regrets.
Glass jars of nostalgia
and summer sunsets.

Wisdom and wit,
broken lines indirect
are a few other things
a poet collects.
Blue hours when evening
and dawn intersect.
Discarded wishes
and feelings unchecked.

The whimsy and notions
other people reject,
are a couple more things
a poet collects.
Recapture, rekindle,
rebirth and refine
are some things that a poet
will do with their time.

Imagery, simile,

free verse and lyric
are woven as cloth
by the poet mystic.
Patterns and metaphor
set to rhythm sublime,
as the human condition
is wrought into rhyme.

There’s a hush in the air
when peace lands in the soul.
There’s a grace released
when the truth unfolds.
There’s a sense of relief
when a story gets told.
And there’s a way with words
only the poet knows. - Susan Frybort
